Victim Services, Guelph Police launch sexual violence support guide

Victim Services Wellington, in conjunction with the Guelph Police Service, has recently published a Support and Information Guide for Survivors of Sexual Violence.

The goal of the guide -- which is available in hard copy through local service agencies or can be downloaded from the Guelph Police website – is ensuring everyone has access to consistent information.

“We were finding that different agencies were giving different advice,” explained Elizabeth Kent, executive director of Victim Services Wellington. “With this guide we are able to ensure everyone is receiving the same consistent messaging.”

The guide was funded through the Ministry of the Attorney General’s Civil Remedies Grant Program.

It includes a definition of sexual assault and discussion of relevant sections of the Criminal Code of Canada; a discussion of what constitutes consent; and options available to survivors after a sexual assault.

The guide also explains the specialized medical care available to sexual assault survivors and discusses the process for making a complaint to police if a survivor chooses to do so; including the investigative process and what a survivor can expect throughout the court process.

“It’s really intended as an A to Z through the whole process,” Kent said.
