Investment in U of G Will Help Enhance Soil Health and Water Quality

The Government of Ontario has announced a $1.8-million investment in University of Guelph agri-food research to help find ways to enhance soil health and water quality.

The investment, designed to protect the environment and foster efficiency in the agri-food sector, will be delivered through the Ontario Agri-Food Innovation Alliance. It will fund U of G research to develop new technologies, practices and on-farm solutions to improve soil and water health.

According to the news release, some of the research will help farmers:

• attract wild bees to help pollinate fruit and vegetable crops

• use suitable tools to track soil health

• learn about what to grow off-season in corn fields to enhance productivity

• overcome barriers that prevent some farmers from adopting best soil health practices

“As Canada’s food university, the University of Guelph is committed to research that enhances the production of safe and healthy food while protecting the environment,” said Malcolm Campbell, vice-president (research).

“With this government support, University of Guelph researchers will make world-class discoveries that help Ontario farmers nourish Canadians and preserve our natural environment.”

Ontario’s Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Ernie Hardeman said that because farmers manage soil health, they are dedicated stewards of the lands they work.

“We want to continue providing farmers with the latest knowledge and tools, so they keep protecting our soil, water and air for generations to come,” he said.

A collaboration between U of G and the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, the Ontario Agri-Food Innovation Alliance funds University research in environmental sustainability, animal and plant health and production, and agri-food and bioproduct development.
