Guelph Man, Matthew Courtney (Mahaffie) Dies In Crash

Guelph Man Dies - Driver's Name Released In Fatal Crash

(TOWNSHIP OF PUSLINCH, ON) - On September 22, 2018, at approximately 5:00 a.m. Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a fatal motor vehicle collision involving two sedans at the intersection of Brock Road and Maltby Road in Puslinch Township.

Wellington County OPP have identified 40-year-old Matthew Courtney (Mahaffie) of Guelph who was pronounced deceased at the scene. Two others were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Const. Joshua Cunningham said the two vehicles involved were a black and brown sedan. The brown sedan, driven by Courtney, is believed to have been travelling east on Maltby and the black vehicle was going south on Brock. The collision took place in the intersection and both vehicles were sent off the road to the southeast corner.

Cunningham also said that a woman around the age of Courtney was seated in the passenger seat of the brown car. She was taken to hospital, along with the driver of the black car, with non-life-threatening injuries.

Officers are still investigating how the collision could have occurred. Cunningham said the changing light at dawn may have played a factor in this crash. Investigators are also looking at whether the brown vehicle stopped fully at the stop sign.

Wellington County OPP and Technical Collision Investigators (TCI) continue to investigate the collision.

The Wellington County OPP is asking anyone that may have witnessed this collision to please call 1-888-310-1122.
