Changes to Ontario Legislation are designed to protect first responders, pedestrians, cyclists

The rules of the road in Ontario changed September 1, 2015. The changes are designed to protect first responders, pedestrians, cyclists and tow truck operators. Here is what you should know:

  1. Distracted driving fines - minimum $490 and points on conviction.
  2. Dooring cyclists, or hitting them with the car - minimum $365 and 3 points on conviction.
  3. Passing cyclists - you must leave at least a metre of space - $180 and 2 points, or $180 if the violation occurs in a community safety zone.
  4. Cyclists -- must ride with a bike lights and reflectors - minimum fine $110
  5. Tow trucks are now included in the category of emergency vehicle at the side of the road - you must slow down, pull over and give them a lane when possible. Minimum fine $490.
