Chronic Pain Is Common For Acident Victims

Many of my clients suffer from long term chronic pain. Persistent pain can alter a life. It affects mood, sleep, activity levels and capacity to work. The management of such pain is a real challenge. It is extremely important to address chronic pain as it can eventually lead to depressive episodes.

For many the extended use of opiates or NSAIDs for pain relief is not an option. The risks of addiction, and medication tolerance are serious ones. Pain medication can have physical and psychological side effects. Some doctors are reticent to prescribe long term pain medication while others freely prescribe it.

Diagnosing chronic pain can be difficult as well as injury and subsequent emotional trauma may overlay each other to make pain worse. Subsequent minor injuries can become debilitating as well as metal process alter perceptions of pain.

The underlying questions when treating pain are

Does the therapy help?
How does it help?

Yoga, physiotherapy, and even surgery may be options to provide pain relief. Some people learn to live with the pain, others try 'alternative' therapies such as acupuncture, or meditation. Patients and doctors, and other therapists must have open and honest conversations with each other in order to help treat chronic pain. For some the pain will never go away, but coping mechanisms can be developed to help make living life in pain easier.
